2020 has been the craziest year of my life and it's only getting started. Not only am I faced with the challenge of finding a cooperating center to complete my student teacher experience next year, but I am now tackling it all from behind a screen. Even though every one is sick of the word "coronavirus," it is a word that we now evolve our entire lives around. Switching to online all the time has been a struggle for most, and I am no exception. My professors have been great and understanding, as they are in the same boat as the students are in, but I still feel the pressure to learn and complete tasks that are more difficult to understand through Zoom. Another area that I am struggling with is finding that perfect cooperating center. While I am so grateful for Zoom and being able to connect with cooperating teachers online, I am still upset that I can't get the full experience of being at the program in person and building a face-to-face connection.
When I get upset about things or start to feel unmotivated I remind myself that I am so lucky to be safe, healthy, and with my family. Since I know I am not the only one struggling with focusing on school and staying motivated each day, I decided to include four easy tips that I have been using to cope and stay motivated.
This might seem life an obvious thing to say, but it is one that has helped me stay on top of my daily tasks and keeping my sanity. I try to wake up at a reasonable time every day, make my bed, make breakfast, and then start my classes. Going on a daily walk or run with your family or just your dogs is a great way to stay motivated, while also getting your daily exercise in. Keeping a routine has helped with my transition from school to being stuck inside all the time, and has also helped me keep up with my school work. While everyday might be similar, I still try to "spice up" my routine so that I am still accomplishing everything that I need to, while not dying of boredom (which leads me to my next point).
2. Spice it Up!
Day in and day out, we are most likely to all be doing the same thing over and over and over again to the point where staying in bed all day seems like a better decision than getting up. While keeping a routine is a great way to force yourself to stay focused and motivated, it is also important to change that routine up every couple of days, if not every day! Simple things like changing up what you eat for breakfast or going for a morning walk instead of an evening walk are easy ways to change up your routine.
3. Find a Project or Hobby
My best friends works for Penn State, so she struggles with the same things as I do when it comes to working/learning online and sitting at home all day everyday. When speaking recently, the two of us decided that we would no longer be bored at our homes; we were going to DIY and find new hobbies to occupy our extra time. I am redoing my entire bedroom, while Erin has decided to make clothing for her dog. Puzzles, games, remodeling, and baking are just a few things that you can learn do to make the most of being quarantined!! Try new TikTok trends, like whipped coffee or energy balls (which are both delicious might I add). No coronavirus will stop you from finding new ways to use up the boring downtime when you are looking to master or tackle any task!
4. Stay Positive- This Too Shall Pass
At the end of the day, no tip to stay motivated can help you get through quarantine. Only you can. Keeping a positive attitude during this stressful time is the best way to get through this. Complaining and being upset every day about not going to school only makes you less motivated and less likely to keep up with school, work, and with your health. Of course it is okay to be upset. We never got to say goodbye and we are stuck inside with the same people 24/7, but being positive and knowing that this will end at some point is how we are going to get through this. So far we have celebrated two of my sisters birthdays, Easter, and my high school senior sister's graduating at home, and even though we are sad to be cooped up inside for these special events, we know we will have a HUGE celebration the minute we can!
2020 might not have been out dream year so far, but we will be together again soon. To my cohort and professors; I'm excited to see you soon (hopefully) but until then we will be Together Apart!
